William and Ed Manning opened their first retail coffee store, pictured here, in Pike Place Market in 1908. By 1916 they had expanded to three locations and added food service. By the 1940s the company had expanded to 50 locations in six states, including Oregon.
This location became a Lowell's in 1957 and is still in operation. I believe Manning's Ballard location was the last of their locations to close, in 1984.
