Construction has just begun for the south railroad trestle across the Deschutes at Milepost 44, north of Sherars Falls. The flat area on the left bank became the south pier for the trestle, built for James J. Hill's Oregon Trunk line in about 1910. After crossing this first trestle, the railway travels through a tunnel under the bluffs and crosses the river again on a second, "twin" trestle, returning to the left bank.
Note in detail view 1 a small suspension bridge across the river, and in detail view 2 some railroad tracks used in the construction process.
