Looking across the Celilo railroad bridge shortly after its completion in 1912.
Looking across the Celilo railroad bridge shortly after its completion in 1912. The bridge was built during low water, allowing all the main piers to be anchored on solid rock that was exposed at that season. During high water the area under the bridge became a raging torrent.
A contemporary newspaper article reported that the opening of the bridge in January was timely, as the ferry service it replaced was rendered impossible due to ice and snow present at that time of the year.
