This view of Fort Canby in southern Washington gets close enough to show an intriguing detail -- cannonballs used as yard ornaments.
This view of Fort Canby in southern Washington gets close enough to show an intriguing detail -- cannonballs used as yard ornaments. As all the cannons were located on the top of the ridge facing the other way, if there were ever a conflict, the cannonballs would need to be hauled up the hill promptly.
In fact, there were no military conflicts at Fort Canby, which was built at the north side of the mouth of the Columbia during the Civil War to guard that strategic entryway into the Pacific Northwest.
