The steam tug in the foreground is the "Arctic", built in Bay City, Oregon in 1901 for the J. S. Kimball Company of San Francisco. She is getting ready to go to sea with a large log raft, probably bound for either San Diego or San Francisco. Used mostly for the lumber trade, the Arctic was 192 tons, 145 feet long and had a 350 horsepower three cylinder engine.
