This intriguing photo features a smaller steamboat than is often seen in historic photographs. No staterooms here - simply an exposed deck for passengers over the freight compartment below. The Restless was constructed in Gardiner in 1875 by L. B. Emmery, and served local traffic near the mouth of the Umpqua River for many years, though like most crafts she was occasionally rebuilt and altered. Gardiner was an important early seaport, and in fact is one of the few coastal towns shown on 1850s maps. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
