This solemn photo was taken for the Oregonian by photographer Allan Delay in April of 1959 at the site of the funeral for Chief Tommy Thompson. The newspaper caption reads, "The grave of the chief was dug in the center of this rocky hilltop cemetery, which to the east has a view out over the Columbia River."
These are part of the mourners who gathered for chanting and prayers. Chief Thompson served as chief at Celilo from about 1906 until his death, which occurred two years after Celilo Falls were flooded by The Dalles Dam.
