Falling big trees was only the beginning. It took many more hours to saw up each tree - to cut it into sections that could be hauled back to the yard, using cables from a steam donkey. As shown here, and in the similar photo in Related Photos below, this step was usually done by one man using a single-handled cross-cut saw. In today's world of gas-powered chainsaws, it's still true that the skill of sharpening a saw is at least as important as the skill of using the saw. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
