A few years after this photo was taken, the old Columbia River Highway was built, and the point on the right of the plateau became the location of the Rowena Crest Viewpoint.
A few years after this photo was taken, the old Columbia River Highway was built, and the point on the right of the plateau became the location of the Rowena Crest Viewpoint. Today the historic highway is being restored - parts for cars and parts for bikes and pedestrians.
A great way to enjoy this spectacular scenery is to walk the Rowena Plateau Loop, starting at the parking lot at the viewpoint. Photographer George Weister was also a hiker, and climbed high with his bulky glass-plate camera to capture this dramatic view.
