A hundred years ago, the only way to travel by carriage on the Oregon Coast was to drive on the beach. South of Cannon Beach was the obstacle of Hug Point, shown here. For years it was only passable at low tide, and even then required traveling around the point through shallow water. Sometime around 1900 a wagon road was blasted out of the rock, making the trip possible at other than just the lowest tides.
