The fire crew moves quickly to prepare the horses to pull Engine 8 from the station at 45 NE Russell in Portland. Note the pulleys used to lower the harnesses from the ceiling. In 1910, the transition to motorized engines was in progress, but horses still pulled much of the apparatus. Years of practice had enabled crews to ready the horses efficiently, and the teams themselves were clearly well-trained. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
