Part of a series of Columbia River photos created by Jackson on a visit to Oregon about 1900, this view provides a picturesque look at the trip from Vancouver to Portland at that time. Detail view 1 gives a closer view of the ferry itself - perhaps the first iteration of the "City of Vancouver" (there were two versions).
If you know for sure the name of this ship, please let me know. Ferries were the best way to cross the Columbia from the 1850s through 1917, when the Interstate Bridge first opened.
