An early Portland Fire Department pumper from about 1917. This is likely a Christie steam pumper, which served many U. S. cities at that time. It combined "traditional" steam pumping technology, earlier drawn by horses, with a newer internal combustion engine that drove the front wheels. (Note the exhaust pipe behind the front wheel.) -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon. Original courtesy of City of Portland Archives.
