This turn-of-the-last-century view of Portland was distributed as a 7 by 9 inch photochrom color view by the Detroit Photographic Company. This printing process was most popular in the 1890s, when true color photography was being developed but was still commercially impractical. A black and white negative was transferred to a series of litho stones, and then each stone was retouched to print a particular tint. The final product usually required at least six, and more commonly from 10 to 15 tint stones. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
