This studio portrait was taken in The Dalles by Benjamin Gifford in 1899.
This studio portrait was taken in The Dalles by Benjamin Gifford in 1899. While photographers of the era often costumed their native american subjects in ceremonial garb (sometimes from other tribes), here the simplicity of the wrapped blanket adds to the power of the photo.
We don't know much about Pop-Kio-Wina, except that he was probably part of the Wasco tribe that lived along the Columbia River near The Dalles.
