This is an unusual portrait of Joaquin Miller. While many portraits of him exist (he was famous for self-promotion) almost all show him with a full beard. Probably taken in the 1880s, this photo was made by Napolean Sarony, a New York photographer known for paying his celebrity clients to take their photos, as long as he then retained the distribution rights for copies. Though he struggled in Oregon, paying to publish his first two books in Portland, Miller found fame after moving to London, where he generally wore clothing of the western frontier. His home from 1886 till his death in 1913 was in Oakland, California. Later purchased by the city of Oakland, the property is now known as "Joaquin Miller Park." -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
