Wells Bennet Rides his Henderson 4 Up Mt. Hood - 1924
Wells Bennett was a leading racer, hillclimber and cross-country specialist of the 1910s and early 1920s. In this photo, he is attempting to climb Mount Hood. While it generated the desired publicity, the attempt failed.
At this time, Bennet was reaching the end of his racing career, but he was now the owner of the Portland Excelsior/Henderson Motorcycle dealership. The bike in this photo is an Excelsior/Henderson four cylinder model, one of the fastest bikes of its time.
Detail view 1 shows the four inline cylinders, while detail view 2 shows the special spiked tires Bennet used for this ride. Bennet continued his relationship with Mount Hood in his later years, as he retired to a ranch near the town of Hood River. He died in 1969, at the age of 78.
