Major General Edward R. S. Canby - circa 1863
Edward Richard Sprigg Canby (November 9, 1817 – April 11, 1873) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the Civil War. During the Civil War, he was head of the Department of New Mexico, and defeated Confederate general Henry Hopkins Sibley at the Battle of Glorieta Pass.
In 1873, he was the commander of the Pacific Northwest, and was killed during peace talks with the Modocs in northern California. He was the only U. S. general to be killed in the Indian Wars. This photo was taken by photographer Theodore Lilienthal, in Louisiana, probably when Canby was returning to Washington D. C. in about 1863.
We know General Canby's name today from the town of Canby, Oregon, and from Fort Canby, north of the mouth of the Columbia.
