Known for his scenic Montana stereoviews, photographer Forsyth created this portrait shortly before Charlot's death in 1910. Charlot led the struggle for his people to remain in the Bitter Root Valley. He failed in his attempt, and the tribe was moved to the Flathead Reservation, about 1.3 million acres out of the 20 million acres originally controlled by the Flathead Nation.
Today, about 4000 members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation live on the Flathead Reservation. Another 2800 tribal members live off the reservation.
