During his tenure in Oregon he dedicated St. Mary's Cathedral in Portland, founded the Sisters of St. Mary, and opened Mt. Angel College. In 1895 he ordained the first native Oregonian priest, Arthur Lane, the grandson of the Mexican–American War general and Oregon politician Joseph Lane.
Archbishop Gross fell ill while giving a retreat in Annapolis, and died in Baltimore in 1898 at the age of 61. He was known as "the silver tongued orator of the hierarchy."
