This Matthew Brady photo of Joseph Lane was probably taken near the end of his term in the U.S. Senate from 1859 through 1861.
This Matthew Brady photo of Joseph Lane was probably taken near the end of his term in the U.S. Senate from 1859 through 1861. Compared to the Austin Turner photo of him also taken on the east coast, in this photo he appears to me to be a bit heavier, and a lot more tired.
We know he lost the national election in 1860 as a pro-slavery vice-presidential candidate, and certainly times were not easy for anyone in the early 1860s. After his term ended in 1861, Lane returned to Oregon where he lived until 1881.
