Simon Benson was a technical innovator, and one of the first to use logging railroads rather than ox teams to haul his cut logs to the river.
Simon Benson was a technical innovator, and one of the first to use logging railroads rather than ox teams to haul his cut logs to the river. He also pioneered the use of compact steam-donkey engines to winch fallen logs to his railroad. While the location of this photo is not labeled, we're placing it in Columbia County as that is where Benson had most of his holdings of 46,000 acres.
He sold his landholdings in 1910 for $4.5 million.
