Tillamook Rock and Lighthouse, 19 miles south of the Columbia River bar.
Tillamook Rock and Lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1881, and this photo was taken soon after that. The distant view may have resulted from necessity, but I like to think the photographer wanted to emphasize the splendid isolation of the site.
Located one mile offshore from Tillamook Head, the lighthouse can be seen from Seaside, Cannon Beach, and Ecola State Park. It was shut down in 1957 and replaced with a whistle buoy, having become the most expensive U.S. lighthouse to operate, due to the severity of local storms. Note in detail 2 the elaborate mechanisms for getting people and goods on and off Tillamook Rock.
