This photo shows an early fish wheel on the Columbia River, near Bradford's Island, which is now submerged behind Bonneville Dam. Fish wheels were first located on the Columbia in 1879, and exploded in popularity so quickly that in 1883 they helped supply 39 Columbia River canneries with over 42 million pounds of salmon.
Catches slowly declined after that, and in Oregon fish wheels were outlawed by voters in 1934.
