This detailed photo of Hercules Pillars, also called The Needles, was created as a glass negative by Howard C. Tibbitts, photographer for Union Pacific and their Sunset magazine. The Columbia River was high at the time, though the presence of wildflowers shows that this was not taken in the middle of winter.
Several years later, in 1913, the area between the pillars and the river was filled, and the railroad tracks were moved to that side of the rock formation. Note in detail view 2 that the mills at Bridal Veil can be seen in the distance.
