Dr. Sidney Marsh was appointed President of Tualatin Academy in Forest Grove in 1853, and carried on as that position when the school became Pacific University in 1854. President Marsh continued to lead the university until his death in 1879, when he was succeeded by John R. Herrick.
He served longer than any other Pacific University president, and is the only one to die in office. Marsh Hall, named in his honor, is the central building on the campus, and was completed in 1895. Though it burned in 1975, its shell survived, and the structure was reopened in 1977.
