The curve of the damaged tracks contrasts with the straight boards of the boxcar in this century-old view of a derailment on a small trestle in Eastern Oregon.
The curve of the damaged tracks contrasts with the straight boards of the boxcar in this century-old view of a derailment on a small trestle in Eastern Oregon. This trestle crossed Willow Creek at Horseshoe Bend, north of Ione along Highway 74.
Both railroad and highway followed the creek from Heppner to the Columbia River. The highway still exists. The railroad is long gone, though the right-of-way is still visible along the length of its run.
In the middle right you can see a group of men, apparently pondering their next steps after the accident damaged both bridge and railroad cars. All of the crew died in the accident.
