Appointed as Oregon's first territorial governor in 1848, Lane served as delegate to the U.S. Congress starting in 1851, and was Oregon's first senator after it became a state in 1859. This photo was taken in New York by A. A. Turner of Appleton & Company, probably shortly after Lane began his term as senator in 1859.
Lane was the vice-presidential candidate with Breckenridge in 1860 for the pro-slavery wing of the Democratic Party. Ensuing events, including the Civil War, essentially ended his political career, and he returned to Oregon where he lived until 1881.
