Mountain wildflowers are in bloom for this photo of men and women on horseback, making their way along a hillside with Mt Rainier in the background. Popular with foraging deer and mountain goats, this area is named for P. B. Van Trump, who along with Hazard Stevens made the first recorded ascent of Mt. Rainier in 1870.
Years later, in 1888, Van Trump guided John Muir to the mountain's summit. The original photo was created by Asahel Curtis, brother of Edward Curtis, who also spent much time at Mt. Rainier as a guide and a camper.
