A freight train stops at an unnamed depot somewhere in Cow Creek Canyon, part of the north-south line that by 1908 was leased by the Southern Pacific system, though it was not purchased by Southern Pacific until 1927. This image was captured by Southern Pacific photographer Howard Tibbitts, who took photos for them throughout the western United States.
The Cow Creek Canyon segment of the line runs from Glendale to Riddle, in Douglas County in southern Oregon. It was built along that route to avoid the much steeper alternative of going through Umpqua Canyon.
