Three girls grace the front porch and a couple more children peer from the second-story window, in this view of military officers' housing in southern Washington 125 years ago. While the original boudoir card print locates this building at Fort Stevens in Oregon, a careful comparison with James G. Crawford's view shown in Related Photos (see detail view 2) shows this building to be at Fort Canby. Built on the inside of Long Beach Peninsula, the Fort was located to help guard the mouth of the Columbia River. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
