In this view of Multnomah Falls, Haynes uses a vignette style, lightening the perimeter of the photo to accentuate the falls. Created in the mid-1880s when Haynes was based in Fargo, North Dakota, this photo may have been taken on the same trip in September of 1883 when he recorded the Villard Gold Spike Expedition. If so, it appears to be from several weeks later, as trees are beginning to shed their leaves. Shown is the first Multnomah Falls bridge, recently completed at the time of this photo. Reinforced in 1891, it had vanished by 1899. The current concrete bridge was constructed to replace it in 1914. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
