The original for this image is a photo by Clarence Winter that was hand-tinted by Fred Luetters, one of the few tinting specialists whose name appeared on their work. While it is simply signed "Winter" in the margin below the photo, on the back is a stamp for "Winter - Luetters Pictures".

Luetter's skill as a colorist is apparent - he was known to have both a careful hand and a more realistic palette than many others of his era.

Larch Mountain, an extinct volcano, is located to the northwest of Mt. Hood. It is a popular spot for photographers, as five mountains can be seen from its slopes.
