This 1898 photochrom view of Mt. Hood demonstrates an early way to mass produce hand-colored photographs.
This 1898 photochrom view of Mt. Hood demonstrates an early way to mass produce hand-colored photographs. Developed by Hans Jakob Schmid in Switzerland, the enhanced version of lithography was licensed mainly to two firms -- Detroit Photographic Company in the U.S. and the Photochrom Company of London.
While the copyright notice on this photo references the Photochrom Company, I'm including it with the other Detroit Photographic Company views because it has the same numbering system and because it came from a collection of prints by that company. It may have been that photos were exchanged between the two companies that used this process.
