Mary Richardson Walker arrived in Oregon Country with her husband Elkanah in 1838, settling among the Spokane tribe to teach and preach at their mission, Tshimikain, located 25 miles northwest of present day Spokane. Mary raised six children in a 14-foot square cabin during the nine years they spent in this remote outpost.
In 1847, after the Whitman Mission killings, the Walkers moved to the Forest Grove area where they spent the rest of their lives. This photo was taken in 1871 when the Walkers took the train back to Maine, for among other reasons, to attend the graduation of their son Elkanah, who then set off to be a missionary in China.
