Sumpter, Oregon was a booming gold-mining town at the time this photo was taken. A number of businesses on Mill Street can be identified in this early city view. In the left foreground is the Hotel Griffin, before its covered walkway was added in the early 1900s. On the right, more clearly visible in Detail View 2, is the Columbia Brewery. Detail View 1 shows scaffolding for a construction project. The full photo reveals in the right background, from left to right, the Ellis Opera House (pointed roof), Basche Hardware and Bank of Sumpter (first brick buildings in Sumpter, built 1898 and 1899), Banquet Saloon and Bakery. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
