This early view shows both the locks and the steamboat Governor Grover the year they were completed.
This early view shows both the locks and the steamboat Governor Grover the year they were completed. The locks were opened on January 1, and the Gov. Grover was launched on January 28, 1873. She made her first trip on March 16, and on March 18 became the first large vessel to go as far upstream as Harrisburg.
Dated March 21, this photo likely shows the Grover returning from that trip. Named after Oregon's fourth Governor, La Fayette Grover, she was not long-lived, being dismantled in Portland in 1880.
