The original for this rare view is a hundred-year-old copy print of an even older photograph of steamboat activity below Willamette Falls. Likely taken the year before Carleton Watkins made his famous trip to Oregon, an unknown photographer has captured this early scene -- before the locks were built in 1873 but after the flood wiped out Linn City in 1861.
The Rival was built at Oregon City by William and John Dement and George Pease in 1860. The Alert made its first trip in January, 1866. The Rival was dismantled in 1868 in Portland.
