Spokane Falls and the Town - 1880s
This is an early view of Spokane Falls and the beginnings of Spokane, which was itself named Spokan Falls when founded in 1872. I've retained the photographer's title which doesn't bother to mention the name of the town.
The three men in the foreground were likely all needed to help bring the camera and other equipment to this location. While their presence in the photo is clearly staged, a look at detail 2 gives you the impression that they were indeed awed by the sight.
Detail 1 shows the most "civilized" part of town, where the buildings were actually painted (or whitewashed). In the distance in the upper left, we can see a wooden bridge spanning the Spokane River. This is likely the town's first bridge, built in 1881 near Howard Street.
