At first glance this group portrait appears to be a very diverse logging crew, but a second look reveals that in addition to saws and peaveys, many shovels and grub hoes are visible.

The clincher is a handwritten title on the original print, that refers to this as "W. V. Martins's County Road Crew". Some members of the crew are listed by name, along with the statement "The rest are Indians". The Native American men are likely from the nearby Skokomish Reservation.
