This photo of downtown Joseph was taken a couple years after the railroad arrived in 1908, bringing with it the new industry of a lumber mill, expanding on the earlier base of grain and livestock. When the timber industry collapsed 70 years later, it was replaced by several brass foundries and other businesses targeted to the tourist trade. With Wallowa Lake nearby, and one of the most striking environments in Oregon, Joseph continues to attract repeat visitors to its quiet beauty.
