By 1898 Portland had become a thriving modern city, and fine homes were making their way up the slopes of the West Hills. While there were structures on the east side of the Willamette, it's clear that the west shore dominated as a working harbor.
Detail view 1 shows one of several sternwheelers - this one alongside the Willamette Iron Works, which originally specialized in steamboat boilers and engines. Changing its name to Willamete Iron and Steel Works in 1904, the company continued to operate until 1990.
