This idylic view of Willamette Valley farming in the 1920s was taken in 1929 about eight miles south of Salem. A careful review shows that the image is hand-colored, as some of the yellow of the wheat shocks is not quite aligned with the shocks themselves.
This hand-coloring gives the scene an attractive painterly quality. The original for this photo is a glass magic lantern slide, created as an educational tool for students by the New York State Education Department.
