This was the first wagon bridge across the Willamette in Oregon. Opened in December, 1886, it unfortunately collapsed in February, 1890 during severe flooding.
This was the first wagon bridge across the Willamette in Oregon. Opened in December, 1886, it unfortunately collapsed in February, 1890 during severe flooding.
While its structure appears "feathery", the reason for its failure is generally considered to be that its piers were built in the wrong location to deal with river currents during high water.
