Natatoriums were indoor heated sea-water swimming pools, built in a number of locations along the Oregon Coast in the early 1900s. This example at Nye Beach was built in 1911, and also included sun-bathing rooms.
It burned in 1922, but was promptly rebuilt as a much larger facility with an elaborate domed roof, which besides the swimming pool offered a dance hall, movie theater, bowling, and roller skating. Eventually the Natatorium lost popularity and fell into disrepair.
It was demolished and the vacant grounds became a picnic area and parking lot at the Nye Beach Turnaround. Behind it is the New Cliff House Hotel, build in 1913 and renamed the Gilmore in 1921.
