Hotel Chewaucan, Paisley, Oregon - circa 1915
Built in 1910, the Hotel Chewaucan was called by locals "the finest hotel within 45 miles". They were right - it was the only hotel within 45 miles.
45 miles north of Lakeview and 120 miles southeast of Bend, it was a welcome stop for travelers on that hot and dusty road. One of its attractions for nearby ranch hands was the fact that it boasted an impressive 50-foot-long back bar, with hand-carved woodwork, huge plate glass mirrors, and polished brass foot rails.
The hotel held up pretty well until the Depression hit, at which time travel slowed and the lodging rooms on the second floor slowly became vacant. By 1943, only the restaurant and the bar were open. About 1949 the restaurant closed, and then the bar gave up the ghost in the early 50s.
Being in a dry climate, the empty hotel lasted until the about 1977 when a fire started on the second floor, completely consuming the building in a matter of hours. Today the site is a vacant lot in Paisley, population 296.
