Prospect Hotel, on Crater Lake Highway - c. 1920
Located half-way on a two-day carriage trip from Medford to Crater Lake, the Prospect Hotel was built in the late 1800s as the Boothby House. Sold by the Boothbys to the Ray Electrical Company in 1897, the hotel was again sold in 1912 to Jim and Mary Grieve. Jim added the cabins and gas station seen in this view, and Mary became known for her cooking.
Over time, as roads and cars improved, stopping on the way to Crater Lake became less popular, and the hotel went through a period of decline. However, several dedicated couples worked to restore it, and today it is once again "the place to stay" on the way to Crater Lake, and is listed in the National Historic Register. The cabins have been replaced, but the main building still looks much like it did in this photo.
