A crowd gathers for a harness race somewhere in Coos County, in about 1900. Like most American harness races, the horses are pacers, not trotters.
A crowd gathers for a harness race somewhere in Coos County, in about 1900. Like most American harness races, the horses are pacers, not trotters. This means that their required gate involves lifting both left legs and then lifting both right legs.
While we don't know the precise location of this racetrack, we do know that photographer Ernest Stauff was based in Arago, in Coos County. Also, a 1901 article in the Medford Mail refers to a horse race track in Coquille City, about six miles north of Arago. A flume or trestle in the background might provide a clue to the location of the track.
