A Young Logger in a Log Chute - c. 1905
While not signed by Ford, the original for this photo was acquired with other similarly formatted photos that were signed by him.
A pencil inscription on the original identifies the young man in the foreground as Andrew Emmarson, who in 1910 was working as a head loader and living in Columbia County, Oregon. His father and brother were also loggers, so it may well be his father standing on the log to his right.
A steam donkey is visible in the background, but there is no clear indication of a logging yard here. Thus we feel it's likely that this was a way station along a longer log chute, which sometimes stretched for miles through the forest. Multiple steam donkeys were used to pull the logs with cables along the route to the eventual yarding area.
