Prinz & Nitschke Undertaking and Furniture, The Dalles - c. 1895
In our modern world of specialization, you don't see too many "undertaking and furniture" companies anymore, but you can imagine how the same skills and equipment were needed to make both back in the day.
One of a series of photos of commercial blocks in The Dalles taken by well-known photographer Benjamin Gifford, this view gives us a highly detailed look at Prinz and Nitschke's operation. According to one online source, the address was 209 and 211 East 2nd.
Detail view 1 shows us the ubiquitous boys who always seemed to show up for these town view photographs. Detail view 2 reveals a couple small American flags, some plants, and the ropes used to secure the canvas awnings for the store windows.
